Amos Hunt 1900 Calf Ear Mark
This mark is made when the calf/cow if branded. Ranchers are able to tell their cows apart with these two markings, ears and brand on the left hip.

Actually, where the brand is depends on how the brand was registered and the state you live in. In Utah, where Amos Hunt ran his cattle, the brand can be registered in one of four places: left hip, right hip, left ribs, or right ribs. Amos Hunt's brand was registered on the left hip.
